The final of the Ladies’ Island Championship took place on Saturday 17th August at Machrie Bay Golf Club. Susan Butchard from Lamlash, last year’s winner, was up against Doreen Mainds from Whiting Bay.
The match was tight until the second 9 when Susan managed to pull away, winning comfortably on the 16th hole by 4&2 to retain the trophy.
Island Mixed Fours
This successful mixed competition is run by the Ladies’ Section of the Lamlash Golf Club annually. The trophy for the overall winners is in memory of Hugh and Rhoda Henderson and the Gardner Trophy for the scratch winners is in memory of Morag Gardner.
This year 17 pairs entered and scoring was excellent, despite some rainfall in the early afternoon.
Winners with a score of 69 – 8.5 = 60.5 were Charlie Taylor from Whiting Bay GC playing with Duncan Heenan from Lamlash GC.
Their excellent round also saw them win the scratch prize!
In second place were Fiona & David Drennan from Lamlash GC with 77 – 15 = 62
The Lamlash Ladies Open, held on the Wednesday 17th July, was a very enjoyable and successful event.
41 ladies played on a lovely sunny day with the course in superb condition and compliments flying about the fantastic greens.
As usual there were prizes at every hole, thanks to the generosity of members and friends of the Club. In addition, several of the main prizes were donated to the Open.

The overall winner was Gillian Lockhart 70 – 7 = 63.
The scratch winner was Charlie Taylor with a 75.

The next quiz night is planned for Friday 24th May ahead of the bank holiday weekend. Duncan is considering a chippy tea night and we will run the previously advertised junior putting contest at 5:30 pm ahead of a 6:30pm quiz time. Your chippy food, will be available anytime after the restaurant opens at 3pm.
On July 21st to coincide with the final round of the Open from Troon (The golf major, not the Lamlash Open), we will have an additional event, which we are calling the ‘Lamlash virtual Pro-Am golf sweep’. Each person who enters (net) Sunday medal score, whether you played in the Whiting Bay Open or the Scratch Cup at Lamlash, will be added to the final round score of one of the top 30 players from the Open, based on the leader-board from Saturday night. For an additional £2 sweep entry, we will have 3rd 2nd and 1st prizes based on the aggregate score of your net medal score plus your professional partner’s gross score for the final day. The prize giving, will occur shortly after the conclusion of the Troon based Open, in our clubhouse.
It sounds complicated, but isn’t really. Imagine playing your Sunday round, whilst Rory plays his and combining your scores.
This is meant to be just a bit of fun, but aimed at engaging even more interest in the final round of the Open especially if you draw the odious (I’m joking. Only because he keeps winning!) but invincible Scottie Scheffler.
Friday June the 14th June at 8pm, is the opening match of the Euros with Scotland playing the underdogs (yeah right) and hosts of Germany. It is on terrestrial TV, so where better to watch it than the club? Duncan is doing pies and pub food before the match. Even I will be there. The other key round-robin nights are the 19th and 23rd, both at 8pm.
For your future diary, the Scotland v England final will be on the 14th July. See you there!!!
